I have released my latest album called After Light. This is a new project for me and a departure from Creature. I have self titled this project and I intend to release quite a lot of work under this name over the next few years. I am just brimming with ideas.

After Light is a Dark Ambient soundscape project and it is pretty bloody dark. You can read more information at the After Light site.

One of my favourite guilty pleasures in sound design is that of granular synthesis. Sound created from millions of tine sound particles. I am currently readin Curtis Roads excellent yet head spinning book Microsound.

This is an album of short pieces of music and sound design influenced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. I have been a fan of the workshop ever since hearing the spooky music for Doctor Who.

This album features 28 tracks of intricate sound design and I feel it captures the overall feeling of the workshop nicely. British Radiophonics is an album that pays tribute to the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, one of the sound effects units of the BBC, was created in 1958 to produce effects and new music for radio, and was closed in March 1998, although much of its traditional work had already been outsourced by 1995. It was based in the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios in Delaware Road, London, W9, UK growing outwards from the then-legendary Room 13. The innovative music and techniques used by the Workshop has made it one of the most significant influences on electronic music today.

The British Radiophonics album pays tribute to the music created by the men and women on the Radiophonic Workshop. This isn’t an album of covers or copies. It is an album of short incidental music inspired by the sound and the creative processed of the original workshop.

British Radiophonics was written and recorded by Stephen Haunts, or the act Creature. Stephen has been a life long fan of the workshop after first hearing the music from doctor who. As Stephen developed in interest in music he grew to love the output from the workshop even more.

For many years I have found the music of Robert Henke very inspiring. Robert it the creative force behind Monolake and was one of the founding fathers of the software Ableton Live of which my studio is totally dependent.

Robert recently released his new album, Silence, and it continues his amazing quest for clarity and crystalline sound design. I have come across some interviews with Robert recently and thought I would collate the links here. I always enjoy interviews with Mr Henke as they tend to be more technical and transparent about his creative processes than the usual boring interviews you get with artists. One of the interviews talks in depth about his decision not to use dynamic compression on the album which was a particularly bold and great move.

I am a huge fan of the dark ambient pioneer Lustmord. One of my favourite albums of his is the sound track to a short film called Zoetrope.

Zoetrope (1999) is an experimental avant-garde short 18 minute film by music-video director Charlie Deaux. It presents a haunting, apocalyptic story of man’s metaphysical existence.

The film is pretty bloody disturbing and the soundtrack even more so. It’s on youtube so please do go and watch it. I also recommend checking out the album. Turn off the lights and play it loud

The BBC licensed 2 of my music tracks for use in this program, ‘Tough Guy or Chicken‘ on BBC 3, Episode 6 – Bahamas, where 5 blokes swim with sharks. Unfortunately the beeb didn’t tell me which program it was until after it aired, but they have sent me a DVD with it on

They licensed, Hive and Mirror off the Nightmares and Dreamscapes disk. 2 Dark Ambient tracks used for some underwater tense scenes with the sharks
